What’s the point of travelling to a completely new location without getting a chance to do some exploring and finding out new things? Well, none, and that is why it is important to know how to explore carefully and do it in a way that you don’t risk hurting yourself or damaging any property. People inexperienced with this could also risk breaking some laws, and that is why knowing how to explore is a really important thing.
You need to be aware that the laws are there to be followed. That is why, before you set out to explore a new location, make sure it is legal to do so. Getting caught while doing something illegal, and especially in a foreign country, can be really tricky; that is why you need to read up on the location first, see if it’s being safeguarded by the law, and only when you see that it’s safe to go there should you start exploring.
Do some reconnaissance around the location, and try to figure out as much as you can about if; for example, where are the entrances, are doors or windows unlocked, what would be the best exit in case of an emergency, are the rooftops safe or are they about to collapse, etc. You can do all of the from the outside, and only when you figure all of those stuff out, should you start doing some real exploring.
Start your exploration of the location, and make sure you bring with you everything you’ll need: a camera to take lots of pictures or videos, loose clothing in order to be able to move a lot quicker, a flash light if the location isn’t illuminated enough, gloves so that you don’t get your hands dirty in case there’s a lot of dust there, etc. It all depends on the location, but these are some of the necessities you’ll need in order to make the experience even better.
Now all that’s left for you to do is to explore the location. Make sure you see as much of the site as you can, because you probably won’t get another chance to do this on your vacation. Take as many pictures as you can, and also try to touch some of the stuff you find on the site, because nothing beats the feeling of holding something in your hands. However, try to make sure you leave everything in the same condition as you have found it. Try not to break anything, and never take stuff with you; they belong to this location, and you ought only to take pictures of it or just touch it – it’s the unofficial rule of exploring!
Exploring is something everyone should do on their vacation, because that is the best way to get to know their travel destination right to the bone. Just make sure you follow all of the above mentioned rules, also ensuring you have an E111 (EHIC) and your explorations should be exciting and fun, which is what travelling to a new destination is all about.
